ESCORTING OVERSIZED VEHICLES

In Hungary, the 26/2009. (VI.22.) KHEM Decree regulates the road transport of vehicles exceeding the permitted total weight, axle load, or dimensions, as well as the related administrative procedures and applicable fees.

For vehicles exceeding 40 tons or the permitted axle load, an overweight charge must be paid. This fee is determined based on the distance of the approved route specified in the permit, or, if no permit is available, the actual distance traveled on public roads.

If traffic safety requires it, the road authority may mandate police or professional escort services.
For the delivery of particularly large or heavy cargo, logistics and escort agencies assist in coordination.

Basic route escorting may be performed using vehicles equipped with yellow warning lights.
Professional escort vehicles must also be equipped with variable-message signs as required by law, allowing them to manage and restrict traffic when necessary during transit.

Escort services are typically required for the transport of overweight, oversized, unique, special, or extreme-dimension machinery, equipment, and devices.
